There are plenty of ways of subdividing magic wielding and casting. One way that I frequently see is formed and formless. Admittedly that could many a great deal of things but forgive my lexicon for not being that razor sharp in this instance and allow me to explain what I mean.
A lot of magic has a structured form that helps focus the energy and intent involved. Ceremony, symbol and verse all in selected places to create a strong mystical design. Be it geometric, rhythmic or other, the form allows control through its shape. It adds power through its existence and its potent connections to ancient rite, force or entity. There are many other distinctions but my point is merely to give an idea of both so you take my meaning.
Formless magicks come from a more instinctual or improvisational place. Channeling energy on the go, tapping into the flow of reality and altering it through force of self directly or indirectly. There is less of a focus on creating an established structure or ceremony to implement effect. It is more of a continually changing and shifting manipulation of energy and mystic will. Guided by intuition and the senses, the sorceress selects what must happen in the next part of the spell. This is considerably more chaotic but allows for more on the spot spellcasting, which is quite helpful for many mages of the street and anyone who has need of magical assistance on short notice. It is also a more fluid experience I find then its counterpart.
Now obviously the lines I’ve drawn are hardly rigid barriers. Even an improvised spell has structure and form and even a structured spell is often altered by intuitive judgments and personal inclinations of the caster. But I make the differentiation to illustrate what I’m doing in “Edges of Magic”
While I am a avid lover of the magic of “form”, I am also equally endeared of “formless” magic (that which seems so beloved by the fae). This spell you are taking part in while appearing to be something of a more structured nature has a great deal of it’s roots in improvised sorcery.
If this were to be a more structured attempt then I would be much more careful with my words instead of creating sentence after sentence in pursuit of that lovely flow that runs through much of the most eloquent magics I’ve seen.
All this to say, I’m creating this spell with you moment by moment and I have no ultimate design planned outfor its creation let alone completion. Never having attempted something of this nature I thought it best to “experiment” with the medium before trying anything too elaborate and this style of casting is ever so suited to my brand of “experimentation”.
